The scale is an instrument used to measure the length of an object or the distance. Sometimes, due to repeated use, the zero mark of a scale gets worn out and cannot be clearly seen. In some cases, the ends of the scale may get damaged or broken due to various reasons. In such cases, we should measure the length of the object starting from any other mark of the scale (say the $1 cm$ mark). We subtract the reading of this mark ( $1 cm$ ) from the reading of the other end. For example, to measure the length of a pencil by a broken edge scale whose mark at the broken edge is $1.4 cm$ , place the scale along the length of the pencil with its left end at $2 cm$ and note the reading at the other end of the pencil. The difference between the readings of the two ends of the pencil will give the length of the pencil.
