Endocytosis is the process of bulk transport of large substances from outside of the cell with the help of a vesicle. These substances are too large that cannot enter through channel protein. Hence, the cells take these substances by engulfing them in a vesicle from outside. In endocytosis, the fluidity of the cell membrane allows the membrane to surround the particle to be ingested. Example: engulfing of pathogens by immune cells.

Endocytosis takes place in three steps:

In the first step, the plasma membrane makes an inward fold forming a cavity that fills with extracellular fluid with engulfing particles.

Then, the plasma membrane folds back on itself until it forms a uniformly enclosed membrane around the trapped molecules. This enclosed membrane or cavity is called a vesicle.

The vesicle is detached off from the cell membrane as the ends of the in-folded membrane fuse together. The internalised vesicle is then processed by the cell.
