The horizontal axis of the histogram represents the age group in years.

Here, $x$ -axis represents age group in years and $y$ -axis represents number of residents of colony $x$ .

For the first bar, we can say, the height of the bar is $100$ , and width of the bar ranges from $0 - 10$ years, this means there are $100$ residents of the colony $x$ in the age group $0 - 10$ years.

If we add the heights of each bar graph, we get $100 + 200 + 300 + 500 + 400 + 600 + 300 + 100 = 2500$ .

Thus, the histogram represents the data about the age distribution of $2500$ residents of colony $x$ .

Now, the number of persons below $40$ years of age $= 100 + 200 + 300 = 600$

Hence, the required answer is $600$ .
