Fungi are organisms that include single-celled microorganisms such as yeast as well as multicellular mushroom. All fungi are heterotrophic, that is, unlike plants they cannot prepare their own food. Thus they take them from outside. Fungi are mostly saprophytes. They cannot ingest their food like animals. They secrete some enzymes into the environment and the enzymes digest dead organisms or waste materials, which is then absorbed by the fungi. Thus, they act as decomposers and maintain a balance in nature. Some fungi such as mycorrhiza live in a symbiotic association with plants. The plant provides the fungi with carbohydrates such as glucose and sucrose. In return, the plant is benefited by the fungus which has a high absorptive capacity for water and mineral nutrients.
