1-b The endoplasmic reticulum is an inter membranous network made up of flat or tubular sacs within the cytoplasm. It serves as the channel for the transport of proteins between various regions of the cytoplasm. 2-c Lysosomes are simple tiny sac-like structures present in the cytoplasm. Each lysosome is surrounded by a single membrane. These contain powerful enzymes which destroy any foreign material, for example, viruses and bacteria. Lysosomes are also capable of removing the poorly working cellular organelles by digestive enzymes, that is why lysosomes are also known as housekeepers or scavengers of the cell. During the breakdown of cell structure, the lysosome may also burst and enzymes present in it eat up their cells. That is why, lysosomes are also known as suicide bags of a cell. 3-a All organisms carry genetic information and these are responsible for heredity characteristics in the offsprings. Plant and animal cells have a nucleus inside the cytoplasm and it is surrounded by a nuclear envelope. The nucleus is known as the "brain of the cell" as it controls all the processes and chemical reactions that take place inside the cell. 4-e Mitochondria are oval or rod-shaped double membrane-bound organelles of the cell. It provides the site for aerobic respiration(it is also known as cellular respiration). It uses air to oxidise carbohydrates and fats present in the cell to release energy. A portion of this energy is used to form energy rich compounds(ATP). This energy is used by the cell to perform various energy requiring processes, therefore, it is also known as "the powerhouse of the cell". 5-d Green plants prepare their own food through the process called photosynthesis.
