Aim: To show that air occupies space.

Experiment: Take a glass jar. Put a funnel on its mouth. After that, put some clay around the top of the jar and hold the funnel in the middle of the glass jar. Make sure that there are no holes in the clay. Now, pour coloured water slowly into the funnel. (The use of coloured water helps in observing the water level.) Now, make a hole in the clay.

Observation:The water does not flow down in the jar initially, because the jar is full of air and there is no space for water. Hence, the air in the jar pushes the water in the funnel and holds it there. When you make a hole in the clay, the air escapes the jar through the hole and the space will be occupied by the water.

Conclusion: From the above observation, it is clear that the air occupies space.
