The organs which have the same embryonic origin and same fundamental structure but are different in their structure and functions are called homologous organs. For example, the fins in whale and the wings in bat are the modified forelimbs. Also, the thorns of Bougainvillea that are defensive and tendrils of Cucurbita that help in climbing have the same origin. Both of these structures arise from the leaf axil. Hence, A and D are homologous structures.

These organs follow the same basic plan of the organisation during their development. But later in adults, these structures are modified to perform different functions as an adaptation to different environments. Such structures appear different but have a common ancestry thus, they represent an example of divergent evolution.
