The digestive system of humans starts with the mouth, which also includes teeth, tongue and salivary glands. The food is chewed and is mixed with the saliva.

The food is now pushed downwards into the pharynx with the help of tongue. The food now enters into the tube like structure called oesophagus.

The oesophagus carries the food into a muscular bag like structure called as stomach, which produces hydrochloric acid and several other digestive enzymes for the digestion of food.

The food now enters the small intestine, where most of the nutrients is absorbed from the digested food.

The undigested food is passed onto large intestine and is released outside as excreta from the anus of rectum.

For maintaining good health, we need to make sure that we are eating correctly and that would mean, we should have a proper diet. The healthy diet should always contain the following food items in our meal:

Nutrients Food items

Carbohydrates Cereals and grains.

Proteins Fish, meat, eggs, milk and milk products, soyabean, etc.

Fats Butter, oil, cheese and dry fruits.

Vitamins and minerals Sprouts, fruits and vegetables.
