Digestion: Ruminants have a specialised four-chambered stomach, including the rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum. The food they consume undergoes a process of fermentation and breakdown by microorganisms in the rumen.

Absorption: The partially digested food known as cud is rechewed by the ruminant. This process is called rumination. It helps to further break down the plant material. The nutrients are then absorbed in the small intestine, specifically through the villi.

Assimilation: The absorbed nutrients from the small intestine are utilised by the ruminant's cells for energy production, growth, and maintenance.

Egestion: The undigested materials along with waste products are eliminated from the body through the anus as cow dung (faeces).
