The motion of an object is defined as the movement of an object from its position over time. A body is said to be in a state of rest when there is no change in its position over time with respect to its surroundings. There is no movement of an object when it is in rest.

A body is said to be in motion when its relative position changes with time. When a body is in motion, its position will change in reference to its surroundings. There are mainly four types of motion: translatory motion, rotatory motion, oscillatory motion and vibratory motion. Motions can be periodic or non-periodic in nature.
