The properties of solids are as follows :

1. Solids have a definite shape and distinct boundaries: Due to their strong inter-particle forces of attraction, there is less inter-particle spaces. Hence, solids have a fixed shape and distinct boundaries. For example, book on the table, pen in your hand, etc.

2. Solids have a definite volume: Due to small inter-particle spaces, solids cannot be compressed and thus, they have a definite volume.

Some solid, such as sponge, can be compressed as they have minute holes in which air is trapped. When we press it, air is expelled from the sponge.

3. Solids possess rigidity: Solids are rigid in nature, i.e., they have the tendency to maintain shape when some external force is applied. They may break when the applied force is exceeded, such as dropping, hammering or stretching. For example, a rubber band.

4. Solids do not possess the property of diffusion: Due to small inter-particle spaces (or voids) and strong forces of attraction, the particles of a solid do not move much from their positions. They only vibrate around their mean positions. Thus, in general, solids do not possess the property of diffusion.

However, there are some rare examples of diffusion of one solid into another. For example, when few crystals of Potassium permanganate is added to water, it spreads colour.
