A lens formula is defined as the formula that gives the relationship between the image distance ( $v$ ), the object distance ( $u$ ) and the focal length ( $f$ ) of the lens and is written as: $\frac{1}{f} = \frac{1}{v} - \frac{1}{u}$
Lens formula helps us find anyone among the object distance, the image distance and the focal length when the other two are given.

Magnification is the relative size of the image with respect to the object. The sign and the magnitude of the magnification helps us to tell whether the image is inverted, erect, magnified or diminished.
If the magnification is equal to $1$ then the image is of same size as the object.
If the magnification is more than $1$ then the image is magnified.
If the magnification is less than $1$ then the object is diminished.
The positive sign of magnification states that the image is virtual while the negative one states that the image is real.
