The process in which hydrogen is added to an unsaturated compound with multiple bonds is known as hydrogenation. Alkyne being an unsaturated compound contains a triple bond that combines with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst to give alkane as the product. For example, ethyne being an unsaturated compound contains a triple bond combines with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst to give ethene as the product. Which on further hydrogenation gives ethane. Thus, the presence of nickel, platinum, or palladium catalyst is the necessary condition for the hydrogenation reaction.
