State the important characteristics of isotopes.

(ii) The isotopes of an element have a different mass number and thus differ in the number of neutrons present in the nucleus.

(iii) The isotopes of an element have the same number of valence electrons, so they have same valency.

(iv) The physical properties of the isotopes of an element are different. This is due to the fact that isotopes have different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei. Thus, mass, density and other physical properties of the isotopes of an element are different.

(v) All the isotopes of an element have identical chemical properties. We know that all the isotopes of an element contain the same number of electrons. Thus, they have the same electronic configuration with the same number of valence electrons. Since, the chemical properties of an element are determined by the number of valence electrons in its atom, all the isotopes of an element have identical chemical properties.
