The various function performed by the political parties are as follows:

Contest elections: The primary function of a political party is to contest elections. This willingness to contest in elections is the basic tenet that separates it from pressure groups or movement groups. Political parties try to bring about change in society by capturing political power.

Laying different policies and programmes: Parties reduces the vast number of opinions into some basic positions, and then these political positions can be put forth as policy ideas which can be implemented by the government.

Make laws: The ruling party and its cabinet play a prominent role in making the laws of the nation. The cabinet usually consists of the leader of the winning party and other prominent members who decide on various policies to be implemented in the nation.

They form and run governments: Parties, through a common opinion, recruit leaders and train them further. Lastly, they become the ministers to run the government.

Role of opposition: Parties that lose the elections work as opposition parties to the parties in power. They raise their views and criticise the government in case of failure. They act as an important balance of power in a democracy.

In shaping public opinion: Parties are responsible for shaping public opinion. They do this by raising and highlighting the common issue of the public.
