The rituals and customs of the Brahmins were often costly for many poor people. Some rituals that required sacrifice of animals like goats, chicken, sheep were difficult to afford for some people because these animals were used in agriculture and sacrificing them would result to financial loss.

People also found the varna system as very rigid as it was based on occupation. People of the lower strata felt discriminated by the people of the upper varna. This kind of hereditary domination was disliked by people of lower varna.

During this time the importance of the Vaishyas also increased due to increase in trade and commerce. Moreover, the new religions like Buddhism and Jainism did not believe the varna system or non-violence. Hence, people wanted to believe in a religion that treated them equally.
