Reverse osmosis is a method of removing dissolved solids from liquids without boiling. Reverse osmosis is done with the help of a special semi-permeable membrane. The property of such a membrane is such that when we try to pass salty water through it, it allows water to pass but not the salt. Thus, if we pass tap water through such a membrane, only pure water will pass through it. Reverse osmosis process is being used to provide drinking water in areas where subsoil water is brackish in nature, i.e., where the salt content in underground water is so high that it becomes unfit for drinking purpose. Can you get pure water through this if you use seawater?
