Aim: To show that oxygen is necessary for the germination of seeds.

Materials Required: Two conical flasks, some gram seeds, one small test tube containing pyrogallic acid and another test tube containing plain water.

Procedure: Take two conical flasks and label them as A and B. In each flask, spread a wet cotton-pad and place on it some gram seeds. In Flask A lower a small test-tube containing alkaline pyrogallic acid by means of a thread, taking care that not a single drop of acid falls on the seeds or on the cotton-pad. Alkaline pyrogallic acid absorbs oxygen present in flask A. Keep the tube hanging by fixing a cork on the mouth of the flask. Arrange flask B in the same way, except that the small test-tube in this flask contains plain water. Place both flasks in a room at ordinary temperature.

The below diagram shows the experimental setup to show that oxygen is necessary for seed germination.

Observation: The seeds in flask B will germinate showing the importance of oxygen for germination. In flask A, seeds do not germinate because there is no oxygen as pyrogallic acid absorbs it.

Result: It is proved that oxygen is necessary for the germination of seeds.
