Materials required: A potted plant, a strip of black paper, clips, a beaker, a test tube, a Bunsen burner, a tripod stand, wire gauze, water, alcohol, and iodine solution.

Procedure: Take a potted plant and destarch it. Cover part of one leaf with a strip of black paper. Now keep the plant in sunlight for 5–6 hours. Now pluck the leaf that was covered with black paper. Test the leaf for the presence of starch using an iodine solution.

Observation: You will notice that the covered portion does not show the presence of starch, whereas the uncovered portion turns blue-black, indicating the presence of starch.

Conclusion: This shows that light is necessary to prepare carbohydrates or food during the process of photosynthesis.
