The embryo is the structure in plants that develops from the zygote prior to germination. Thallophyta, Bryophyta, and Pteridophyta have naked embryos that are called spores. Also, their reproductive organs are very inconspicuous, and hence they are called 'cryptogamae' (Gr. Crypto — hidden + gamous — marriage) which is meant by “those with hidden reproductive organs”.

Seeds bearing plants are the plants that form seeds as a result of sexual reproduction. The seeds consist of the embryo along with stored food which is utilized during germination. Gymnosperms and angiosperms are the seeds bearing plants. Also, having a differentiated plant body into roots, stem and leaves in addition to the vascular system, gymnosperms and angiosperms are called 'phanerogams.'
