The motion a pendulum is said to be both oscillatory as well as periodic but the motion of earth round the sun is only periodic not oscillatory. Explain the reason.

Periodic motion : A motion that repeats itself after equal intervals of time is known as periodic motion.e.g revolution of earth around the sun, vibrating running fork or a pendulum of a clock. In every case the body in motion comes to its previous position after a definite interval of time.

Oscillatory motion An object in such motion oscillates about an equilibrium position. Such force tends to return the system towards its equilibrium position. A motion of pendulum or the tuning fork are the example of oscillatory motion.

The main difference between the periodic and oscillatory motion is that in oscillatory motion the body oscillated about its mean position in a definite time. For example, a simple pendulum. It passes through its mean twice during position each oscillation while in periodic motion, there is no such thing like "mean position". Pendulum is the example of oscillation while revolution of earth about the sun is example of periodic motion.
