Wool is a proteinous fibre. Wool is commonly obtained from the hair of Sheep, Goat, Yak, Rabbits and Camels. Wool traps air in its pores, so act as an insulator during winter. The process of removing hair (or cutting off hair) from the body of a sheep in the form of fleece is called shearing. After shearing, sheep's skin is dipped in the antiseptic solution to prevent it from skin infection. When the caterpillar is ready (in 5–6 weeks) to enter the pupal stage, it stops feeding and its salivary gland starts secreting a sticky fluid (a protein called fibroin). This fluid hardens on exposure to air and forms a long thread of silk. This thread gets wrapped around its body to form a ball-like structure called a cocoon. The process of washing the fleece (cut hair of sheep) that removes dust, dirt, dried sweat and grease is called scouring. Scouring makes the fleece of sheep clean.
