Cells are the structural and functional unit of life. The three main components of the cell are the cell membrane, the nucleus, and the cytoplasm. Cells are surrounded by a selectively permeable membrane known as the cell membrane or plasma membrane. The plasma membrane is a biological membrane that separates the interior of all cells from the outside environment which protects the cell from its environment. It consists of a lipid bilayer. It is porous and allows the entry and exit of only selected substances. It also prevents the movement of some other substances across it. Thus, it is called selectively permeable membrane. This selective nature of the plasma membrane is critical for maintaining a stable internal environment in the cell.
