The equivalent resistance $(R_{e q u})$ , of the given circuit is given as,

The parallel equivalent of the resistance is given as, $\frac{1}{R} = \frac{1}{R_{1}} + \frac{1}{R_{2}}$

The series equivalent of the resistance is given as $R = R_{1} + R_{2}$

$\frac{1}{R_{1}} = \frac{1}{40} + \frac{1}{60} \frac{1}{R_{1}} = \frac{3 + 2}{120} = \frac{5}{120} = \frac{1}{24} R_{1} = 24 Ω$

$R_{2} = R_{1} + 96 = 24 + 96 = 120 Ω$

$R_{3} = 40 + 20 = 60 Ω$

$\frac{1}{R_{e q u}} = \frac{1}{R_{2}} + \frac{1}{R_{3}} \frac{1}{R_{e q u}} = \frac{1}{120} + \frac{1}{60} \frac{1}{R_{e q u}} = \frac{1 + 2}{120} = \frac{3}{120} = \frac{1}{40} R_{e q u} = 40 Ω$
