Kabir was one of the most influential saints, who probably lived in the fifteenth-sixteenth centuries. He opposed most of the major religious traditions. He openly ridiculed all forms of external worship done in both Hinduism and Islam through his teachings. He also opposed the superiority of the Brahmanas and the caste system. His poetry was usually in a form of spoken Hindi which could be easily and widely understood by ordinary people. Sometimes, he used cryptic language, which is difficult to understand. He believed in Supreme God, whom he said is formless. He said that bhakti or devotion is the only path to salvation.

Mirabai was herself a Rajput and a wife of a crown prince. She was a devotee of Lord Krishna. Despite belonging to an upper-caste herself, she never believed in caste systems. She was a disciple of Ramdas, who belonged to untouchables. She believed that all humans are the same in the eye of God. Rather, she believed that there is an existence of God in every living thing. She sang many songs and poems to express her devotion, and many of them openly challenged the norms of the “upper” castes.
