The endosperm is the triploid, nutritive tissue that develops from the primary endosperm nucleus (PEN), which is the product of triple fusion during fertilization. In coconut, the primary endosperm nucleus divides repeatedly to produce a large number of nuclei, without wall formation. It is called nuclear endosperm. Meanwhile, the central vacuole appears in the central cell and pushes the cytoplasm containing the nuclei to the periphery. Then multinucleated cytoplasm in the periphery undergoes cleavage and gives rise to a multicellular structure in the outer part called coconut meal. Free nuclear and vacuolated endosperm located at the centre is called coconut water.

The endosperm is the most important part that provides nutrition to the developing embryo. Endosperm development always precedes the development of the embryo. Most zygotes divide only after a certain amount of endosperm is formed. This is an adaptation of the plant to provide assured nutrition to the developing embryo.
