(a) White blood cells (WBCs) are also called leucocytes. They are the cells of the immune system which are mainly involved in protecting the body against foreign bodies. They are the soldiers of our bodies. So, white blood cells help fight infections. (b) Red blood cells (RBCs) are called erythrocytes. They are biconcave discs shaped with shallow centres. The shape is helpful for gas exchange, and fold when they move through narrow blood vessels. (c) Platelets are tiny cells of the blood. They help in the clotting of blood and stops bleeding by forming a plug or clot at the site of damaged blood vessels. (d) When all the cellular components i.e. red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are removed a clear, straw-coloured liquid remains which is called plasma. Plasma is the liquid part of the blood. (e) The arteries are the blood vessels that deliver oxygenated blood from the heart to the tissues of the body. (f) The blood vessels that carry blood towards the heart is the vein. Vein mostly carries deoxygenated blood. The exception is pulmonary vein it carries oxygenated blood to the heart. (g) Haemoglobin is the iron containing respiratory pigment. It is a protein present in the red blood cells which in the transport of oxygen.
