The continuing sequence of organisms through which energy and nutrients transfer as one organism eats another is known as the food chain.
(i) Generally, the food chain starts with the producers and these are autotrophs photosynthetic organisms such as plants, cyanobacteria, or algae.
(ii)The organisms which eat the producers are known as primary consumers, and they are generally plant-eaters, herbivores, though they may be bacteria eaters or algae eaters.
(iii)The organisms which eat the primary consumers are known as secondary consumers, and they are usually meat-eaters named carnivores.
(iv) Decomposers decompose remaining of other animals and helps in growing primary producers by increasing soil fertility.
