Addition polymerization is the process of repeated addition of monomers that possess double or triple bonds to form polymers. Example: polyvinyl alcohol, poly ethylene, polyvinyl chloride etc. Condensation polymerization is a process that involves repeated condensation reactions between two different bi-functional or tri-functional monomers. Example: Nylon-6,6.

In the first step formaldehyde reacts with phenol and produces o-Hydroxymethyl phenol. Then o-Hydroxy methyl phenol and phenol come together and form Bakelite. The reaction is condensation polymerisation as two molecules condense and give out by-product.

Bakelite Uses are as follows,

1. Bakelite is a good insulator used in non-conducting parts of radio and electric devices like switches, automobile distribution caps, insulation of wires, Sockets, etc.
2. It is used to make clocks, buttons, washing machines, toys, kitchenware, etc.
3.It can be made into different colours so, it is used in producing vibrant and attractive products.
