A biogeochemical cycle is a pathway by which a molecule moves through both biotic (biosphere) and abiotic (lithosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere) components of an ecosystem.

The nitrogen cycle is a biogeochemical cycle. The nitrogen present in the atmosphere is converted into different forms like nitrates. There are four steps in the nitrogen cycle. They are as follows:

Nitrogen Fixation: The plants may take up the nitrogen from the soil with the help of nitrogen-fixing bacteria called Rhizobium which is present in root nodules.

Nitrification: It is the formation of nitrates from ammonia.

Ammonification: When plants or animals die, the nitrogen present in the organic matter of plants or animals is released back to the soil. This process of decomposition produces ammonia.

Denitrification: It is the final stage of the nitrogen cycle in which nitrate is converted into gaseous nitrogen (N) and released back into the atmosphere.
