What happens when a beam of light passes through a colloidal sol?

When a beam of light is passed through a colloidal solution, then light scatter from the particles. This scattering of light illuminates the path of the beam in the colloidal solution. This is known as the Tyndall effect and the illuminated path is known as Tyndall cone.

What is tyndall effect?

When a strong converging beam of light is passed through colloidal solutions, the particles are seen to scatter light. This scattering of light by colloidal particles is called tyndall effect. True solution is transparent, its particles are not visible, therefore, light passes through the solution without scattering. Because of the presence of large sized particles suspension shows tyndall effect.
