A chemical reaction involving decomposition of a compound by the passage of electric current [direct current, (D.C.)] is called electrolytic decomposition reaction.

Electrolytic decomposition of water with the help of an activity- Electrolytic decomposition of water to hydrogen and oxygen is also termed as Electrolysis of water.
Experiment:

1.We have to take a glass beaker which should be fixed with two electrodes here, the positive electrode will act as anode and the negative electrode will act as cathode.

2. Insert two test tubes in the beaker and fill almost one-third of a beaker with the water. Now observe the level of the water.
3. Connect electrodes with the battery and supply electricity into an electrolyte solution of water.
After some time, switch off the current and see the present level of water in the test tube, which is now decreased.
The vacant space in test tubes is filled with $H_{2}$ and $O_{2}$ gases.
When the Ion separates:-
→ Two moles hydrogen gas is released at the cathode.
→ One mole of $O_{2}$ evolve at the anode.

$2 H_{2} O (l) \overset{current}{\to} 2 H_{2} (g) + O_{2} (g)$
