What are multimolecular and macromolecular colloids? Give one example of each type. How are associated colloids different from them?

(a)Multimolecular colloids: In this type of colloidal system, the particles of the dispersed phase consist of aggregates of large numbers of atoms or small molecules of particle size equal to that of true solutions. The aggregate has the dimension size of colloidal particles. Solutions of gold, platinum, and sulphur are some examples of it.

(b)Macromolecular colloids: These are the colloidal system in which an individual molecule is of the large size which is of the colloidal dimension. Protein, enzymes, gelatine, starch, cellulose are some naturally occurring macromolecules. Artificial macromolecules are polythene, polystyrene, nylon.

However, associated particles are different from multimolecular and macromolecular colloids. These substances behave as normal electrolytes in low concentration and form aggregated particles called micelles at higher concentration.
