Sometimes, it is not convenient to express larger measurements in smaller units or vice versa. For example, to express the distance between Delhi and Lucknow in metres is not convenient. Similarly, it is also not suitable to express the length of a pencil in metres.

Rather, to express the distance between two cities in kilometres and the length of small objects like a pencil in centimetres is more appropriate. Here, kilometre is a multiple and centimetre is a submultiple of metre. Thus, multiples are larger whereas submultiples are smaller than standard units. These are made by using prefixes with the standard units.
