Reflection of a set of parallel light rays incident on a smooth or flat surface produces parallel reflected light rays. Such type of reflection is called regular reflection. That is, regular reflection is a reflection of light rays from a smooth surface. Mirrors, glasses, water surfaces and all polished shiny surfaces produce a regular reflection. Images formed by regular reflection are always clear and distinct.

Reflection of a set of parallel light rays incident on a rough surface produces reflected light rays that travel in different directions. Such type of reflection is called a diffused or irregular reflection. That is, diffused reflection is a reflection of light rays from a rough surface.
Most of the objects like plastic sheets, writing paper, cloths, wooden boards, metallic sheets, human skin, leather pieces, etc., have plane but not smooth surfaces. We can see the roughness of these surfaces using a microscope. Such surfaces produce a diffused reflection.
