The friction that exists between the two surfaces when they are in contact in which one of them slides on the surface of another is known as sliding friction. The friction acting when an object rolls over the surface of another is called rolling friction. It is very difficult to move a heavy suitcase by dragging it on the floor. The reason is that the sliding friction between the heavy suitcase and the floor is very large. If we provide small wheels to this heavy suitcase, then it can be pulled very easily. This is because when we attach wheels, then sliding friction is converted into rolling friction and rolling friction between the wheels of the suitcase and the floor is very less. Hence, we can conclude that rolling reduces friction. Thus, sliding friction is greater than the rolling friction. This is because the area of contact of the surface is large in the case of sliding friction than the rolling friction.
