The soil was arranged in a sequence based on the texture and size of the soil particles during its formation. This vertical arrangement is in well-marked layers in the soil profile. These layers are called soil horizons. These horizons are Horizon A, B, C, and D from the uppermost layer to the parent rock.

Horizon A is the topmost layer. It contains soluble minerals and organic materials from decayed plants and animals called the hummus, needed for the growth of plants. It can be found in the topmost layer of Horizon A and is prone to soil leaching, which is common in this layer.

Horizon B is the layer beneath the topsoil, and it consists of sand, silt, and clay. This layer, also known as the subsoil, contains less organic matter than horizon A and contains more minerals. The true soil is the combination of Horizons A and B.

Horizon C is made up of small pieces of rocks. The true soil develops from these rock materials, but they get buried under in this process. The rocky particles in this layer are not affected by biological processes.

Horizon D has unbroken solid rock material lying below horizon C, known as bedrock. This is a solid, non-porous layer, and holds the water above it, which is used by humans.
