Different types of solutions are as follows:

Solid Solutions — In solid solutions, a solid is the solvent and the solute can be either a solid, liquid or a gas. For example metal alloys are the examples of solid in solid solutions. Hydrated salts (salts containing water of crystallization) such as hydrated copper sulphate (blue vitriol), hydrated ferrous sulphate (green vitriol), hydrated magnesium sulphate, etc. are the examples of liquid in solid solutions. Gases adsorbed on the surface of metals like nickel, platinum, etc. are the examples of gas in solid solution.

Liquid Solution — In liquid solutions, a liquid is the solvent and the solute can either be a solid, liquid or a gas. For example a solution of sugar in water is an example of a solid in liquid solution. In this solution, sugar is the solute while water is the solvent. Another example is tincture of iodine, which is obtained by dissolving iodine (solid) in alcohol (liquid). Here, iodine is the solute, while alcohol is the solvent. Brine (concentrated solution of common salt in water) is also an example of solid in liquid solution. A solution of alcohol in water is an example of a liquid in liquid solution. In this solution, alcohol is the solute while water is the solvent.

Gas Solutions — In gas solutions, gas is the solvent and solute can either be a solid, liquid or a gas. For example camphor in air or iodine in air are the examples of solid in gas solutions. Here, camphor or iodine (solid) is the solute and air (gas) is the solvent. Clouds, fog, mist, etc., are the examples of liquid in gas solutions. Here, water drops (liquid solute) are dispersed in air (gas solvent).
