This ability of an animal to merge with its surroundings is called camouflage. A stick insect looks almost like a twig. A chameleon can change its colour according to its surroundings.

Some animals have spines and shells for protection. Porcupines have spines that protect their soft bodies. Crabs, snail and turtles have a shell that protects them.

Some animals, like scorpions, snakes have poison inside them. They use it to protect themselves by biting their enemies.
