(a) It causes air pollution:
When fossil fuels are burnt, it gives rise to smoke which pollutes the environment causing air pollution. It is harmful to humans, animals and also for plants.

(b) It produces less heat energy:
Large quantities of fossil fuels are required to produce a large amount of heat.

(c) It results in global warming:
When fossil fuels are burnt, it increases the concentration of carbon dioxide thereby giving rise to global warming. The global warming disturbs the ecosystem.

(d) It produces harmful gases:
When fossil fuels are burnt, it produces harmful gases such as sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, etc.

(e) It results in acid rain:
When the fossil fuels are burnt, it produces gases such as sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, which reacts with water vapours in air, causing acid rain. The acid rain decreases the fertility of the soil, destroys forests, provide adverse effect on buildings and human beings.
