The menstrual cycle refers to the cyclical changes in the ovary and uterus that takes place due to changes in the levels of hormones secreted by the ovary and pituitary gland. This cycle lasts for 28-35 days and repeats itself. The different hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle are LH– a luteinizing hormone, FSH– a follicle-stimulating hormone, progesterone, oestrogen. It includes three phases, the Follicular phase that lasts for 14 days, the luteal phase lasts for ten days and the menstrual phase that lasts for 4 days. The follicular phase has been described below:

The follicular phase lasts for fourteen days. The hormones LH and FSH are released from the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. The FSH triggers the primary follicle to convert into a mature Graafian follicle. Simultaneously, there is a gradual increase in the level of LH which causes the follicle to grow, causing the secretion of oestrogen. It inhibits the FSH secretion and stimulates the secretion of the LH, increased secretion of LH called LH surge results in the release of the ovum from the mature Graafian follicle into the fallopian tube, causing ovulation on the 14th day of the menstrual cycle. This phase is then followed by the luteal phase in which the corpus luteum is formed if fertilisation occurs. The menstrual phase follows if fertilisation does not occur.
