The main causes of water pollution are:

1. Activities of human beings: Many activities of human beings pollute water. We have seen that people usually throw the waste and rotten materials from their homes into the drains. Water from these drains pollutes the water of ponds, rivers, etc. Similarly, people pollute the water of rivers and ponds by bathing, washing clothes, animals and vehicles. In some places, dead bodies are also thrown into the water. Water also gets polluted due to the colours used in the making of idols of god-goddesses that are immersed in water. Waste materials thrown by hospitals, urine and excreta of animals also pollute water. Such water contains disease-causing germs.

2. Through agriculture: To save the crops from pests and to increase productivity, many insecticides, weedicides and different kinds of manures are used. These substances dissolve in water and reach rivers and ponds, thus pollute the water.

3. Through industries: The waste products produced in the industries are often harmful. When these products in the factory are disposed of in rivers and ponds, result in water pollution. This water is harmful when used by plants and animals. If these materials contain lead, mercury, chromium, cadmium, etc. they may cause fatal diseases.

The government has made some rules to stop environmental pollution. These rules should be compulsorily followed by all citizens, institutions and industries. Many measures can be taken to stop water pollution. For example, industries should put up such equipment which can remove harmful substances, organic compounds, colour and odour from water. This would make water reusable.

The activities of human beings which pollute water such as throwing the waste and rotten materials from their homes into the drains should be stopped. Similarly, people should not pollute the water of rivers and ponds by bathing, washing clothes, animals and vehicles. The agricultural wastes in the villages should be also properly drained so that the water does not get polluted.
