The major causes of groundwater depletion are:
(a) Rapidly rising population and changing lifestyles: Increase in population has increased the demand for groundwater. More and more groundwater is being extracted for constructing houses, buildings, factories, etc. This leads to depletion of water table.
(b) Agricultural activities: Increase in population has also led to an increase in the crop production. For this, more and more wells have been drilled for irrigation in the past two decades.

(c) Reducing forest cover: Roots of trees absorb water and maintain water table. Deforestation has led to groundwater depletion.
(d) Reducing quality of groundwater: Sometimes, toxic substances get dissolved in water which may seep underground. This may result in the contamination of groundwater.
