Brain is the highest coordinating centre in the body. The major parts of the brain are :

Forebrain - This consists of the olfactory lobes, the cerebrum and the diencephalon having the thalamus and hypothalamus.

The midbrain consists of the cerebral peduncles and the corpora quadrigemina.

Hindbrain consists of the cerebellum, the pons and the medulla oblongata.

The main functions of different parts are given below:

Forebrain: It mainly consists of cerebrum, which is the main thinking part of the brain. It is also the site of learning, reasoning, intelligence, personality, and memory. Therefore, all the thoughts, sensations, actions, and movements are controlled by cerebrum. Moreover, all the voluntary actions of the body are coordinated by cerebrum.

Midbrain: It controls reflex movements of the head, neck, and trunk in response to visual and auditory stimuli. Additionally, it also controls the reflex movements of the eye muscles, changes in pupil size, and shape of the eye lens.

Hindbrain: Cerebellum coordinates contraction and relaxation of the skeletal muscles and helps in maintaining posture and balance of the body. Pons regulate breathing and also maintain balance between the right and the left side of the body. Medulla controls involuntary actions such as heartbeat, breathing, and others. Medulla also controls reflexes such as sneezing, coughing, saliva secretion, and vomiting.
