Placement of the object: Always place the wooden block on a flat surface. Placing the object on an uneven surface gives an incorrect measurement.

Placement of the ruler or metre scale: Always place the metre scale along the length of the wooden block to be measured. The measurement will not be accurate if the metre scale is kept at an angle to the length that is to be measured.

Position of the eye: Keep your eye vertically above the point from where you have to measure. Wrong results due to incorrect positioning of the eye are known as parallax errors. To avoid such errors, it is advised to keep one eye shut.

Condition of the metre scale: If the metre scale is broken or has worn-out edges and the zero mark is not visible, then measure the wooden block from either $1 cm$ or any other mark which is visible on the ruler. After measurement, subtract the reading of this mark from the reading corresponding to the other end of the wooden block.
