A piece of transparent glass bound by two spherical surfaces is called a spherical lens. There are two types of spherical lens.

Concave lens: A concave lens is thicker at the edges and thin at the centre. The concave lens is also called diverging lens, because it diverges the rays of light falling on it. Here, the two surfaces having their own centres of curvature and radii of curvature binds the lens inwards.

Convex lens: A convex lens is thinner at the edges and thick at the centre. The convex lens is also called converging lens, because it converges the rays of light falling on it. Here, the two surfaces having their own centres of curvature and radii of the curvature binds the lens outwards.

Optical focus: All the paraxial rays after passing through the lens converge or diverge and meet at some point or appear to meet at some point on principle axis is called principle focus of the lens.

Optical Centre: The centre point of a lens is known as its optical centre. It is denoted as $O$ . The rays passing through the optical centre of the lens goes undeviated.
Aperture: The diameter of the circular edge of the lens is called the aperture of the lens.
