Food is essential to all the living organisms. We depend on animals and plants for our food. For example, we get vegetables, fruits, vegetable oils, spices, etc. from plants, and we get meat, eggs, milk, honey, etc. from animals.

All plants prepare their own food by the process of photosynthesis. Whereas, animals can not prepare their own food and hence they directly or indirectly depend on plants for their food. Based on the food habitat, animals are grouped under three categories namely, herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. Herbivores: The animals who eat only plant and plant products are called herbivores. Examples: Deer, cow, sheep, goat, etc. Carnivores: The animals who eat the flesh of other animals are called carnivores. Examples: Lion, tiger, leopard, etc. Omnivores: The animals who eat both plants and animals are called omnivores. Examples: Crow, man, bear, etc.
