The Chalukya dynasty ruled in the region of Deccan from the sixth century C.E. with their capital at Vatapi. Pulakeshin I, Kirtivarman and Pulakeshin II were the important rulers of the dynasty.

Pulakeshin II defeated the Pushyabhuti ruler Harshavardhana and other Pallava rulers and conquered parts of Tamil Nadu. He was defeated by Narasimhavarman I in $642$ C.E.

The Chinese scholar Hiuen Tsang visited the Chalukya empire during the reign of Pulakeshin II. A painting in Ajanta depicts Pulakeshin II receiving an ambassador from Iran.

The Chalukyas were great builders, and they constructed several temples at Vatapi, Aihole, Pattadakal, etc. among which Virupaksha Temple and the Pampanatha Temple are the most famous. They also built a cave temple at Badami and were known for patronizing Jainism.

The Chalukya dynasty finally declined after they were defeated by the Rashtrakutas in the eighth century C.E.
