The Coastal plains of India are on both the western and eastern sides of the Peninsular Plateau of India. Hence, they are known as the Western Coastal Plains and the Eastern Coastal Plains.

(a) Western Coastal Plains: It is between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. The Western Ghats are very close to the sea. Hence, the Western Coastal plains are narrow, except in Gujarat. The northern half of this plain is called the Konakan Coast, and the southern half is called the Malabar Coast. This plain has:

Rocky cliffs and an indented coastline.

No large river.

Beautiful backwaters and lagoons (for which Kerala is famous).

(b) Eastern Coastal Plains: It is a broad coastal plain between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal. This plain is known as the Coromandel coast in the south and the Northern Circars in the north. The plain is extremely fertile as it is drained by many large peninsular rivers that have formed their deltas here. Most of the rice production in southern India is from these deltas.
