The importance of tides are as follows:

1. High tides help in navigation. During high tide, the depth of water at the mouth of some rivers increases. This help the ships to reach the ports located on those rivers. The importance of Kolkata port on river Hugli and the London port on River Thames is due to tides.

2. Tide prevents the siltation of harbours by clearing the sediments deposited by rivers on their beds.

3. The saline seawater is stored in low-lying coastal areas during high tides and this saline water is spread out in the fields which is used to make common salt.

4. Tides also help the fishing industry. During high tide, fish comes near the coast. During low tides, the fishermen mostly sail out to the open sea and return to the coast during high tides.

5. The energy which was produced by the tides is used in electricity generation. Tidal power stations have been set up in the UK, Canada, France, and Japan.
